I am working on purchasing a used travel trailer from an Alabama dealer but reside and will register in Georgia. The dealer is telling me they need to charge Alabama sales tax on the transaction. That seems wrong to me – shouldn't I only be pay sales tax to the state I reside in?

Evening_Rock5850:

I believe Alabama charges a sales tax at the point of sale regardless of where you’re registering it. This may be a “double dip” case where you’ll need to pay both.

dearandee:

You should pay the tax from your state… Like my state doesn’t have taxes so we didn’t have to pay any when we purchased out of state.

_B_Little_me:

Some states have reciprocity. I bought mine in west VA, but registered it in IL. IL DMV said I didn’t need to pay sales tax in IL because I paid it in West VA.
