Im new to rv's. Cant afford to do anything unsafe to my new baby
????
Yes. Absolutely use it. If something goes wrong with the AVR on the generator, it will protect your electronics in the RV.
It’s a good idea to have one for shore power hookup. I worry a bit less with my generator, and sometimes I’m lazy and don’t hook it up, but there’s no reason not to. In addition to protecting the RV from bad power, it can protect the generator from excess load. Even if you’re not worried about the generator hurting the RV, you might want to worry about the RV hurting the generator. The good surge protectors will also shut things down if the voltage drops dangerously low (which causes more amps to flow and can overload circuits/wires). You can also track your power consumption. It’s nice to see how many amps/watts various appliances use.
I use one. Eliminate chances of spikes or shorts due to weather.
I have an inverter generator, and a 50amp Progressive Industries EMS. I needed a neutral bonding plug for it to work. Easy to make or inexpensive on Amazon.
I’ve recently stopped using it, because the weight of the unit plus the 30 amp adapters made for multiple connections that can shake loose from the vibration of the generator. When that happens I need to wait a few minutes for the EMS to allow power again, and I found that annoying. The generator has its own power management system, I’ll rely on that for that use case.
I still use the EMS at campgrounds. I’ve been to three different sites with power problems, I definitely recommend one for general use. Low pedestal voltage can cool multiple components in an RV, and is a more likely threat than a surge.
The good ones won’t even work as generators have no ground
A generator is very unlikely to ever cause a surge because the engine isn’t going to suddenly speed up and cause a rise in voltage. Most power spikes and surges are caused within a property and are not from the grid or power source.
surges are most often caused by the inductive kick of a motor turning off – like your air conditioner. So, still a nice idea to use it with a generator if you already own it.
I don’t bother with one but if you’ve got it there’s still an argument in its favour.
Pure sine generator I hope to ensure the AC doesn’t get stressed electronically….
