Somewhat of a novice when it comes to rvs, although I had one growing up and have worked on cars my whole life. Offered to chance to buy a perfectly running, driving Cavalier E-460 C class for very little money. The inside is basically perfect and it’s been stored in a building, but the roof is complete trash. I would be curious how you might go about replacing it, if there are DIY options, or even like a ballpark price for repair. I’m not sure what cause the damage, seems like they started to fix it and gave up (if the answer is absolutely don’t buy it I’m ok with that as well)
Roofs already off that one, so replacing wood is easy. DIY rubber roof is not too expensive. Go for it
I’m paying 6k plus to replace my roof on a 30’ TT. That includes new decking, rubber, & top corner drip rails.
All that wood needs to be replaced
zkde:
If the metal supports that hold the wood down are rusted beyond being able to support a self tapping screw you will be in for a huge job. I recently replaced my roof and even in Arizona it was a concern.
If you’re not going to replace all the decking in the roof, mostly because of what appears to be water damage, you’re at the very least going to want to coat it with a couple coats of Killz to kill/prevent mold growth.
Get you 1/4 luan sheets and rubber roof. Overlay the existing decking with the luan and secure it down. Glue the new membrane down then secure it along the sidewalls and reinstall attachments and trims and you’re golden.
I would run from it personally. Most Class C roofs are made of white foam board running length wise and a sheet of luan glued top and bottom running cross wise. No trusses or framing to screw into.
That luan swelled from water damage and the layers delaminated. When the membrane was removed the wood had dried, the then dried out layers peeled up in big chunks which is why it looks the way it does.
I work repairing RV roofs and see this often. To me this amount of water damage says the owner didn’t perform any routine roof maintenance and would question how well they maintained the rest of the unit.
I wish I had diy instructions. We just replaced ours. It was 10k but thank God for insurance. Stupid tornadoes lol
