I just purchased a 1978 Chevy vanguard. About to take it out for the first big camping trip. I sanitized the water tank with a bleach solution (but I had to guess how big the tank was) and then rinsed it out. My dad says he never drank the water from his tank when he was a motorhome owner. I’m curious as to what most people do as their standard practice. I’d probably just use the water for washing dishes and hands and drink from a jug but maybe we could drink the water? I’m hesitant because it’s so old and I had to guesstimate the sanitation ratios.

Adorable_Wolf_8387:

Yes. Use a filter against whatever worries you.

santiagostan:

I mostly dry camp and ALWAYS drink from my tank.

daluzy:

I have a newer 2018 truck camper and I just buy water to drink and use the camper water for washing.

The issue isn’t always your tank, but the water from many different places you are putting in it.

If you have the space for whole house filters inside your rig, along with a source tap filter and a drink safe water hose, sure.

Again, I did not have the space for all the filters to make me feel comfortable, so I just buy drinking water.

Good luck, be well.

Remarkable_Body586:

1/2 cup of bleach in 15 gallons to sanitize everything. Run it into the lines and let it sit for a day. Drain and rinse. Then you just need to be careful with the quality of water you put back in.

If you’re drinking from the spigots around the campground, it’ll be fine to put into your tank

Either_Selection7764:

I bleach my tanks once a year / at the start of the season I add a quarter to half cup of bleach, fill the tank, run water through all connections until I smell bleach coming out. Let it sit over night, then drain the tanks completely and fill with fresh water. If it still smells or tastes too bleachy I’ll drain and refill again.

I run a camco water filter at the hose connection into the tank or the city water hookup, and use the faucet normally. I will filter the water we’re drinking through a Brita filter, but still do things like brush teeth and wash dishes using water straight from the tap.

Yes we drink the water.

Bitter-Basket:

No. Water bottles for drinking and tank water for cooking and cleaning.
