I’ve got a busted glue joint at the pvc going into the grey tank off the kitchen sink. Off to the left is a flexible pipe to the sink (not visible, but coupled to the angle pvc at the top of the photo), and below is the grey tank. The tank is fixed, but the sink is on a slide, so I assume it’s just fatigue from moving the slide in and out and the total lack of any strain relief on this joint.

Any recommendations on repairs? Can I just clean off the glue and reset it? Any idea what glue that is? It looks nothing like the solvent pvc glue I’m used to. I wish the upstream side fit into the downstream side instead of the opposite – seems much more prone to leaks this way and means I need to glue this back instead of just sticking it back in and tying it off.

Fe1onious_Monk:

The black pipe is called ABS and you can’t use regular pvc glue on it, it has to be for ABS. ABS does not take primer. If you’re going to re-glue that, you need to clean all the old glue off.

I would cut out the old stuff, buy new fittings, and then use a Ferney flexible coupling to make the connection that previously broke to keep it from happening again.

And it’s definitely not 4” pipe.

Routine-Clue695:

Just go get your black pvc glue and primer cleaner at your local hardware store and if you’re constructive enough buy some new fittings. 4”
