Hello everyone,
I have Cedar Creek 30' 5th Wheel (M-28RKFS). It's dry weight is about 8500 lb
And Im looking for a truck now. A dealer has 2009 RAM 2500 Mega Cab (Gas, 5.7), but I'm not sure if it can pull my 5th wheel.
The track has 108k miles on it, plus the engine was replaced recently (I saw all the receipts).
We are full times so we have a bit more stuff probably than the average RVer ????
Please, advice. Thank you!
The weight is marginally close. You didn’t say what rear the truck has. I absolutely would not buy a gas ram that old though. Funny enough the 5.7 in 2009 was one of the better years. I suspect the dash is completely held together with hope and prayers at this point though.
Also a mega cab will require you to offset the hitch or have it on a slide. This is so you have a good turn radius without crushing the cab. There’s plenty of options for this, just factor that into your budget.
Personally I’d look for a f250 with the 6.2 gas for about the same money.
I’m always amazed at the little payload a 3/4 ton diesel has. 2000 pounds is abysmal
I ended up buying the 2500 Cummins 6.7 Crew Cab to pull my 32’ travel trailer (9500 lbs & 1000 lb tongue weight.) The Mega cab cut down the payload too much to even consider.
If you want a Mega cab consider a 3500 instead. Most 5th wheels will have you over your payload with almost any RAM 2500.
That leaves 2300ish lbs to play with but 30 gallons of fuel is 180 lbs. That leaves you about 2120 lbs to play with. Subtract your weight and your wife’s that leaves 1900 (just guessing) then subtract everything you’re putting in the RV and you will be cutting it close. If it makes you feel better I’ve been over weight with my 2019 ram 2600 for 4 years now and it pulls like a champ still. The only thing you would have to worry about is if you get in a wreck and the insurance finds out you were over weight.
I have a 2022 Power Wagon and a 37′ 5er. Works fine. Had to install the 5th wheel prep, but it tows nicely.
It seems like you’ll be over the payload with a 25% pin weight, given your trailer is over 8k dry.
Good
