I’ve got a 2019 KZ Spree Connect.
(Attached best pic I have for reference)
Bought the trailer in 2021 and it looked pretty much brand new and like the previous owners had hardly used it.
We use it for about a week or so every month from April/May to October/November and have since we owned it. Knock on wood no major issues yet.
Trailer is coming up on 5 years old and was wondering what some of the maintenance steps you guys do around this time? What kind of things should I be paying attention to and/or keeping an eye on for potential issues.
Thanks.
Repack your wheel bearings. I guess they need to be done every year or 12,000 miles. I melted one of mine last summer.
Lap sealant on the roof.
I would say repack the wheel bearings.
If the trailer has a leaf spring suspension I would check the condition of the hanger bushings, springs and other parts of the running gear. This is more mileage and driving condition related but it is not uncommon that the bushings are worn out and need to be replaced. If they need replacing do all of them at the same time and replace the OEM bolts with wet bolts.
I would look at replacing the tires if they are original. Trailer tires tend to age out before they wear out and with the trailer being 5 years old I suspect the tires themselves are 6 years old at the minimum.
Something to do at least twice a year is to inspect all of the roof lap sealant and sealant around windows, hatches and trim. Remove and clean up any old dry or loose sealant and reseal. I also like to go under the trailer to inspect the underside for any cuts or openings that would let water or rodents into the trailer then repair as needed. It is also a good time to inspect any exposed wiring and gas lines.
Lap sealant the roof and treat your rubber seals on slides. I’d recommend also conditioning your roof every year to help with longevity. Check battery, wheel bearings, tires for cracking, brakes, and change out your anode rod on your hot water heater.
Geocel Proflex RV caulk/sealant – check all caulked areas on all seams every year. I’ve used Geocel every time and it’s easy to remove and apply. I get 2 to 3 years (depending on location). It’s great stuff. I also use it to caulk my shower and sinks indoors as well.
You should be checking your roof every year, learned that one the hard way. Add lap sealant as needed. Tires are supposed to be replaced every 5-7 years. The rubber just wears out even if the tread looks fine. Mine looked fine after 7, but an internal belt broke and one bulged while in the driveway, we were lucky we didn’t have a blowout! Repack bearings every 1 or 2 years. I do mine every 2, but then we only drive 3000 miles max, (usually less) every year. Do it more often if you travel farther. While repacking your bearings, adjust your brakes and check for wear on the pads. Check your battery, if you have a normal lead acid type and not a sealed one, make sure the fluid levels are correct. I totally spaced that one and our battery was toast after two seasons. We have a sealed AGM now. We leave it on a battery tender in the off season, and it’s good to go during the summer. Those are the main ones that I can think of! I just check most of those while de-winterizing. I just have a checklist of everything and I do it all at the beginning of every season. Most of it just takes a couple of minutes to check, obviously a bit longer if something needs to be tended to.
