Is it possible? I have a 1995 coachmen Catalina, and unfortunately with the water damage, the repair shop is refusing to fix it. I was wondering if I could build something akin to this but with the flat nose of the class a. I’ve seen it done with busses and class c’s. I’d be doing the build myself, and it’ll probably be at least a year project. But is it possible?
I think the question is why would you want to? Sure it looks cool, but it will cost more in time, brain power, and money than it would to just stick built a tiny home. The unit in the picture doesn’t even look like it has wheels. Even if it did, driving it anywhere would be a disaster.
Edit: I see a tire shaped object behind the porch but it doesn’t look road worthy.
This is just a tiny house with extra steps
A better way to go about this would be to build a stylish barn/carport of some sort and park your class A in it to keep it out of the rain.
Enough time and money, anything is possible.
OK… here’s the problem.
All that stuff is heavy. Really, really heavy. The chasis has a GVWR, and weight ratings for each of the axles. Could you strip it down to the chassis and build a house on top of it, incorporating the front clip and some of the existing materials into the house?
Sure! But you’re going to have to be absolutely careful at every step not to make it too heavy. And that is going to be really, really hard. Like, you are going to need to be careful and plan every design decision and step to make sure you don’t go overweight.
You might have better luck using a heavier duty chassis.
I’m not sure what kind of GVWR that bus has. My guess is – not enough to actually be safe to operate.
The only real reason to build this on a vehicle is legal – if you are allowed to have an ADU that is on wheels, but not stick built on a foundation.
