We have a 2015 Cyclone 4200. Pulling with a 2019 RAM 3500 Dually. We have been getting this message over the past 8 months intermittently. We think it’s fixed and will be good for months and then it starts again. The thought of this happening going down a mountain is terrifying. We have to get answers and no one seems to be able to help. Sometimes it’s as shown in the video, others it’s disconnected and doesn’t work at all.
Things we HAVE done: We’ve changed the 7-pin harness, we swapped the plug as it wasn’t the correct one for our truck, we keep it clean and spray the dielectric grease or whatever it’s called in there. The plug is TIGHT, especially since we swapped for the correct one(Pollak 12-706). We’ve moved the prongs a bit in the past to adjust the tightness but it’s really tight. We have also had the truck looked at at the RAM dealer as it’s under warranty and our friend pulled our rig with zero issues with his GMC months ago when we could not get it to connect. It passed all the tests and they said there wasn’t an issue.
We full time and I’m at my wits end. Our 4 children are riding with us and this just isn’t safe not knowing when it will start acting up. Fortunately we were very close to the park we had left and were able to safely get back to it.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Check the ground connections on everything. Especially your truck. If you had a friend pull it with no issue while it gave you issues, my bet is on your trucks wiring. Have you pulled anything else with trailer brakes?
Had this happen on my 2020 gmc Sierra I used to have. Basically these new trucks are so slammed with electronics and computers, any deviation in electrical current from the batteries causes this error and several others.
Swapping in a new battery was the solution in my case and I never saw it again.
Basically: low/failing/bad battery = Christmas tree lights.
Had the same message. It was the brake wiring inside the axle had worn through the plastic sheathing and was shorting out… the trailer axle I should clarify.
I had this issue. There was a loose connection on the back side of the truck plug
Long shot but out of curiosity are the trailer lights LED? I don’t have the same brand truck but I had a similar issue where the OEM brake controller in my 2018 Toyota Tundra was constantly connecting and disconnecting causing me to lose trailer brakes. Turned out to be a known firmware issue with LED trailer lights on the brake controller that they were able to fix with a reflash (and of course 4 months out of warranty!). May want to mention it to the dealership or look in some Ram forums to see if anyone with your truck has had similar issues.
As someone mentioned earlier, check your ground connections. Had the same issue on a Ford. The ground nearest the connectors was corroded. I haven’t seen this issue on my Ram.
The 7 wire has a piece that sits horizontally. The trucks side wore could be wiggling. Crimp the female side truck side.
