If you’re into your fitness and adventure and looking to go away this summer as a solo traveller, then you may be interested in a hiking experience.

Each year, many solo travellers venture out on a solo hiking trip as it’s a way to have a break from their everyday life, whilst also getting to see new destinations.

You can put your laptop down on a Friday after work, go away for a couple of days before returning fresh, to tackle a new week again – it’s the perfect way to decompress! And at the same time, active travel benefits your mental health.

It’s important to wear the right clothing, it’s important that you spend some time learning the route and it’s important to know your limits – the last thing you want is to push yourself too hard. More below.

3 Tips for Solo Hiking in 2024

Wear the Right Clothing

You wouldn’t turn up to a tennis match wearing jeans and a shirt, so why would you do the same when hiking?

When on a hike, ensure you have the correct clothing before setting off.

Hiking shoes are very important as they have the correct support for your ankles as well as grip. Be sure to properly wear them in if you have purchased new shoes, before heading out on your actual trip.

A hiking top is extremely useful as it won’t rub, and will absorb your sweat. Hiking socks reduce blisters and swelling.

Spend Time Learning the Route

Know what you are going to be getting yourself into before setting off. Spend time learning the route you are going to take on, which will also allow you to prepare yourself for any inclines and any drastic changes in terrain.

Be prepared for the weather conditions and make sure the distance you plan to travel isn’t too far for you, in other words, know your limits which leads us to the next point.

Know Your Limits

Know your limits! This is so important because if you don’t, this could put you in potential danger.

You don’t want to take on more than you can chew, as this could lead to you injuring yourself or requiring help near the end of your hike.

As a beginner, take on a beginner walking holiday as these are designed for people who are new to the sport. Once you have experience in hiking solo, this is when you can start to increase the difficulties of your adventures.

Before setting off on your trip, read any user reviews as this can help give you some real-life insight into the challenge you are about to take on.
